WEEK 4: Credit

This Week’s Goal: To learn how your credit score is calculated, how to get your score for free, and how to establish a plan for raising it.

Today’s Easy Financial Task: Get your free credit report(s)

How to rock this task :

Hurray! You’ve made it to the Credit week! This week I’ll show you how to get your free credit reports, how to clean up your report, and most importantly, how to dramatically raise your credit score in a relatively short period of time.

Let’s get started! Did you know that you can get your credit report every year….for free? Yup! There are three main credit-reporting agencies, and each of them will give you your credit report once a year at no cost.

These agencies are:

Experian: 1-888- 397-3742 /

TransUnion: 1-800-888-4213 /

Equifax: 1-800-685-1111 /

So what are you waiting for? Go and get your credit reports! You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report every year from each bureau. This site gives access to all THREE for FREE: It will not ask for your credit card. It will ask you to verify information that you only know about. Make sure you have access to a printer so you can print each one or save as a .pdf to access it later. (thanks Najla)

Today I will get my free credit report(s). Day 22 #LIVERICHERChallenge Click To Tweet

Some people like to get them all at once, while others like to space them out and request a credit report from a different agency every three months. Whatever your preference is … just make sure you get them.

If you’ve already used up your annual credit reports you can also get free ones from

Shocked about your credit report? Don’t worry. I’m going to show you how to improve it in the next few days.

How are you feeling about the Challenge so far? What are your credit issues? Don’t be shy, share with me in the comments below.

My Lisa Rule: I have 4 sisters and Lisa is the baby (well she’s not a baby anymore). Of all of my sisters I’m the most protective over her. Before I share any product or service with you, it must pass my Lisa Rule.

What’s the Lisa Rule? If I would not advise Lisa to use a product or service, I won’t advise you to. YOU are my Lisas. I feel protective over you and your financial journey.

The products/services mentioned in this post pass my Lisa Rule. Yes, I’m an affiliate, but I would not recommend a product or service that I didn’t believe was helpful and useful.

Those sights kept asking for credit/debit card information. I’m just going to go with Credit Karma right now for both myself and my husband. What they say matches up with what I have listed. When things get a little more stable week to week I’ll see about doing a report from those folks.

        Awesome, thanks!

  • NikkiF

I have a creditor that’s calling about an old debt (from 2006) I have plans on paying it off but not right now. How can I stop the calls?

    • Stacey

Nikki, you might need to review Day 20. She talks about your rights and what you can do about the creditors. I know how stressful those are, good luck!

      • shonda

Nikki, also review the SOL for debts in your state, and make them verify the debt is truly yours!

    • Samantha

Check out Day 20 Tiff talks about how to handle the calls. Make sure you have them verify the debt before you pay it off. Sometimes paying old debt can make your credit score drop. She also talked about checking the statute of limitations for your state.

    Hi Tiffany,
Thanks so much for the Live Richer Challenge. I have passed it on to a lot of friends and family. Your advice is universal so women from all over the world can benefit from it. Wish I could attend the party. I hope you will consider coming to Toronto, Canada and sharing your knowledge because I have yet to find any local sisters doing anything like this and we definitely could use the help.

  • Shaq

Is there a difference between the credit report you get on Credit Karma and the report you get from the credit reporting agencies directly?

  • ash

How is the diffrent from the she sent us too.

  • Samantha

Does anyone have any advice on handling student loans? That is all I mostly have on my credit reports.

  • tanya4man

FYI – Credit Karma is free & there’s an app for iPhone & Android! Its thru Transunion and its great. It gives all the info from a paper credit report & I can view my credit score every month

This definitely helped me today because I’ve never had access to all three of my reports before and was not aware that I was able to receive them for free once every year! Luckily I also have a bank that provides me my credit score for free with the use of their credit card! My credit report looks clean! My score has been going up! Started at 540 and now at 692 and just paid off my credit card in full so I’m looking forward to seeing 700+ next month!!!!!!

  • Bey

He tiff, so i found something on 1 of my credit reports that I KNOW FOR SURE does not belong to me! Is it ok that i created an dispute?

  • Nafeesah Smiley Leverett

I’m super excited about the credit challenge. I have my credit report, but a lot of stuff I remember being up there is gone. I would to get this under control cause I want to have a great financial future and get my business of the ground without looking like I can’t pay for stuff.

  • Ebiere Nicholas

My score is not moving. The worse is i have a card that is used 93%. Now am a full time student so is difficult to pay all. I only pay the minimum which i think is not right. Also have a card loan. I have been paying up front so i don`t know how that affect me when i did not pay the following month since am more than up to date on the car. Thank you for been a guide.

  • Sharnique King

I have been fighting with this credit thing for months now, and my score just raised 8 points, so with time and guidance I’m sure I will see better scores soon!!!

  • Michelle Williams

I pulled my credit today and i was pleasantly surprised at all the green marks that was on there. I had some negative ideas about debt when i was younger and my credit report reflected. So happy those mistakes dont stay with us forever.

  • Layla

I have some pretty bad marks on my credit report mostly from collections accounts and credit card over-usage. So I’m looking forward to getting advice on how to remove inquiries and collections accounts.
I’m just loving the Challenge so far. I’m learning soooo much and it feels good to finally be able to budget, pay off debt, and rebuild my credit history.

  • This challenge has been awesome. Some things I new but I also learned some new things that I did not. Thank you for empowering women to be fiscally responsible and for sharing your story with transparency and authenticity.

  • Lashawn

I have 3 different lenders listed on my credit report for my student loans. Two of them no longer have the loans. How or should have them removed? And why has the oldest lender(1999) been removed?
    Thank you
